9 Reasons to Book a Reading Retreat

Updated: Aug 19

Palm trees and sunset on a beach with text overlay: "9 Reasons to book a Reading Retreat." Books in foreground, peaceful mood.

See what we did there?

If you’ve ever taken a PTO day to finish a book, functioned on 30 minutes of sleep because you simply had to know the ending, or actually squealed and kicked your feet when the love interests got to the hotel and there was only one bed… keep reading. You’re in the right place.

And you’ll be in an even better, more scenic place when you treat yourself and your TBR stack to a reading retreat. Read on (literally) to learn more.

  1. Skip the planning stage

Like our standard Slow Travel Retreats, when you book a Slow Travel Co. Reading Retreat, you’re handling your visa, plane ticket, and… that’s it. Your hosts will handle the bookish activities, lodging, chef-made meals, and transportation. All you need to do is show up (probably with an extra suitcase in tow for your reading materials).

  1. Make bookish friends

The only thing better than reading an unputdown-able book is convincing other people to read said unputdown-able book and then talk about it with you. We can’t promise anything (it all hangs on how convincing you are), but your odds are pretttyyyyyyy high here. Your odds of making life-long friends are pretty high, too.

  1. Pick your destination

With Slow Travel Co., you’ll have a number of destinations to choose from. Whether you’d rather curl up with a mystery in a cozy English manor or flip through a beach read from a breathtaking oceanside Costa Rican villa, you’ll find the right place for you (and your TBR).

  1. Unlimited reading time

You read that right. There is no pressure to do any activity on a reading retreat except read. Oh, and there's no assigned reading at a Slow Travel Co. Reading Retreat. You can read whatever your heart desires.

  1. Bookish activities

If you want to do something besides read, we’ll provide specially designed bookish activities like a book exchange, book fair, or local bookstore visits.

  1. It’s an introvert’s oasis

If small talk is your worst enemy (enemy enemy, not enemies-to-lovers enemy), you’ll be in good company. Reading retreats by nature attract introverts, and — bonus! — you’ll have a built-in conversation topic with everyone you meet.

  1. Bring your book club

We love giving solo travelers a safe, female, bookish community. But if you’d rather book a customized private retreat with your book club, we can make that happen too!

  1. Pro recommendations

If you want to stay in the country you’re visiting for longer than the retreat’s set days, your Slow Travel Co. host can provide recommendations, reserve accommodations, and more to help your trip continue smoothly.

  1. Combine two of your passions

Traditionally, reading and traveling don’t mesh. One is a slow-paced, indoor activity while the other is a fast-paced, adventurous activity. But when you go on one of our reading retreats, you can soak in a new city and a new book at the same time.
